One: Personal Statement

In 1993 I was born in a small city in Colorado, after that I moved many, many times (30 and counting to be exact) all over the US. After living around Colorado, California, Oregon, Texas, almost Arizona, and then Colorado again, I moved to South Korea in 2013. I'm the youngest child, which means that I am probably the most strange in my family. And while I wasn't allowed to read Harry Potter or play Digimon, I was allowed to pursue an art career even though it might not work out. There was never much pressure for me to choose a high-paying and elite career, that is until I came to Korea and my family invested most of their money into me as a "nest egg" or sorts.

In Korea, specifically Yonsei, I have been an RA, on the student council, participated in many events and surveys and petitions, and am now a TA. I take a lot of classes because part of me loves to learn and the other part of me wants to graduate as soon as I can, in order to free up some time so I can pursue my passions. I like to keep busy and when I'm not keeping busy my brain simply reels in other, not so productive ways. (Like remembering that thing I said to someone 5 years ago or wondering what will happen if Trump is elected.)

What am I passionate about then? Currently I love caring for living things. I love my succulent/cactus collection, and take a lot of joy in teaching others how to care for plants and animals. I also really love research projects and feminist essays. I've been a huge geek my entire life (Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, Anime, Manga, Video Games, you name it) and right now my goal after graduation is to start a gaming company with my older brother. Card games were an untapped market until recently, so I'm trying to be part of the movement to simplify and bring life into card games once again. However, I still have an interest in video game design, interactive design and exhibitions, and researching people who play games and use technology. Studying culture and history on the side of IID made me appreciate how much knowing about how people think and work can help you craft experiences that work best for them.

My dream is to live in a bright house full of plants with a pet Shiba, and to work on personal projects all day. Drawing and sketching, making kinetic videos, and designing games mostly. Writing has always been a passion of mine so currently I'm trying to find ways to incorporate writing and story telling into my design.

From this class I how to learn more about gathering and organizing information, making it usable, and then finding unique ways to use that information with current and upcoming technology. I think that design is very much about keeping up with the future and future technologies, so I'm very interested in learning more about VR, AR, and AI (especially with recent developments of Pokemon Go, VR gaming and 360 cameras/video, and Alpha Go).

I tend to be shy at first, but outspoken when it comes to academics because I take learning seriously. So I may seem a bit frigid to my peers, but I'm always up for laughing, teasing, and drinking outside of class. I'm sarcastic and like puns but I tend to overthink and keep other people away without intending it, which is probably why I like cactus and can relate to them.

I'm INFP, Hufflepuff, Team Instinct, Introverted, Pisces, and am scatterbrained like Alice in Wonderland, but I like it that way.
